Universal Studios quits adaptation of ‘Wicked Lovely’

Universal Studios has dropped their developing film adaptation of Wicked Lovely, based on the fantasy novel by Melissa Marr in what could have become their own Harry Potter/Twilight/Hunger Games-like franchise. The book is the first of a five-part series about a teen girl who has the rare ability to see faeries – a dangerous and seductive species in Marr’s vision. The project is now in turnaround, so we’ll have to wait and see if another studio picks it up. Heat Vision reported the news on Thursday, saying  that Universal realized “the project doesn’t suit their needs.”

Keira Knightley in talks to star in twist on ‘Romeo and Juliet’

Some of the best of fractured fairy tales and re-imagined classics has come from writers asking themselves, “What would the other side of the story look like?” And henceforth sprung wild successes like Wicked and upcoming major projects like Maleficent. Next up adventure in walking a mile in the minor character’s shoes? Romeo and Juliet as told from the point of view of Rosaline, Romeo’s object of affection before he met Juliet. The film adaptation of the novel that will tell Rosaline’s story when it hits shelves in May, When You Were Mine, is in development at Fox 2000 Pictures. Vulture reported today that Keira Knightley is in talks to star in the adaptation, based on what will be the debut novel of Rebecca Serle.

‘One Day’ delivers both sap and unique storytelling

The world of the romantic comedy seems very dry to me lately. We all know the story: guy meets girl, guy dates/sleeps with girl, guy starts to fall for girl, guy loses girl, guy gets girl back, guy might even lose girl and get her back one more time, and finally guy makes a major change in his life and kisses girl (most likely in the rain or at someone else’s wedding).Thankfully, there’s a recent crop of films like (500) Days of Summer, Crazy Stupid Love and One Day that are starting to pull away from said formulaic genre. I love me a good-and-sappy rom-com, and One Day delivers both a healthy dose of sap plus a unique storytelling experience for its audience.

Beloved characters come to life with spot-on casting in ‘One Day’

When you’re a fan of a book and you finally have the opportunity to see its story adapted to the big screen, there are few things more devastating than seeing your favorite characters realized all wrong. Casting and an understanding of the character by everyone involved are essential to doing justice to the source material. Fortunately for fans of David Nicholls’ One Day, the team behind the film got that all just right: romantic leads Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess as Emma and Dexter are everything you could hope for. Unfortunately, though, the adaptation falls short in some areas as the plot, in a screenplay written by Nicholls himself, feels like it’s going through the motions.
